Pickleball Construction

Everything you need to know about the process of pickleball construction

Pickleball Construction Installation Process

If you’re considering installing a pickleball court, it’s essential to understand the installation process.

Here is just some of the process used at The Pickleball Court Construction Company to deliver your perfect court.

The first step is to measure the court’s dimensions and ensure you have a suitable space.

Then, you’ll need to pick a suitable surface for your court. Talk to us, and we can let you know the benefits of each surface type and help you choose the best option.

We will then prepare the area, ensuring it is level and firm, and carefully lay out and install the playing surface, which can vary depending on the desired court type.

Finally, the court is finished off with fencing, netting, and any necessary line markings.

With the help of a professional company, you can have a top-notch pickleball court that will bring enjoyment to players for years to come.

Construction Time

Most courts can be built and ready for play in 3-4 weeks. However, in the case of colour-coated courts, at least four weeks should be allowed after surfacing before the colour coating is applied. The court will be fully functional during this time, as we will have used temporary lines.

Pickleball Court Surface Maintenance

Whether you are a seasoned veteran or a newcomer to pickleball, maintaining your court surface is crucial to keeping your game smooth and fun.

Regular upkeep of the surface can help prevent damage caused by weather and regular use, which can extend the life of your court and increase its level of safety. There are a variety of steps that players and owners can take to keep their pickleball court in tip-top shape, from sweeping and cleaning to patching and resurfacing.

By regularly maintaining your pickleball court, you can ensure that it remains a safe, enjoyable place to play for years to come.

Court Design

If you are looking to enjoy the game of pickleball right at home, designing a pickleball court can be an exciting undertaking. However, the process involves more than simply marking lines out on a patch of land.

This is where a professional pickleball installation company can be of great assistance.

We can evaluate your space and recommend the best layout, materials, and safety features for your court. We will also ensure that your court is built to regulation standards and provide ongoing maintenance support, so you can enjoy your new court for years to come.

With the help of a professional installation team, you can customise your court to fit your unique style and preferences, creating a perfect space for you and your friends to get in on the action!

Court Specifications

A standard pickleball court is only 20 by 44 feet, but you’ll want to leave room for running off the court after playing the ball.

The recommended size of an official pickleball court is 34 x 64 feet.

The width of the pickleball lines is 2” (This is the same measurement as lines on a tennis court)

Orientation

The court’s orientation is also important to ensure players have adequate sunlight and wind exposure. A north-south direction should be maintained to minimise the sun’s angle in the player’s eyes. However, site constrictions may mean we cannot achieve the optimal orientation.

Surface Colour

Lastly, colour choices for the court can add an extra style element to your design. Whether you want a traditional green court or a bold, eye-catching colour, we can assist you in selecting the perfect materials for your dream court.

Nets

If you’re installing permanent nets, you’ll need to decide what size net you’d like to purchase.

Regulation nets should all be positioned so that they’re 36” high at the sides and 34” in the center of the court, however when it comes to a net’s actual dimensions, products come in either a 31” height or a full 36 inches. If you want to be able to roll a pickleball underneath the net, go with the shorter 31” option. Otherwise, the 36” net will prevent balls from crossing beneath.

Pickleball net posts typically comprise 3mm polyethylene and should use a 23 oz. vinyl headband. Net posts are placed 22’ off the centre.

Pickleball Surface Types

Pickleball is becoming an increasingly popular sport, which can be played on various court surfaces. From painted porous macadam hard courts to non-porous cushioned acrylic, every surface has its own unique benefits and drawbacks. Sand-filled and sand-dressed artificial grass carpets are perfect for outdoor play, while polymeric rubber is an excellent choice for indoor courts.

Artificial clay might be the perfect option for those who prefer a more traditional clay court experience. And if you’re looking for a softer surface with less impact on your joints, porous cushioned acrylic could be the way to go.

With so many different surfaces, there will surely be a perfect pickleball court for every player. Contact us, and we can help you choose the best option for you.

Painted porous macadam hard courts

These are the most popular outdoor pickleball courts due to their durability and slip-resistant surface.

This revolutionary court surface offers superior performance, consistent ball bounce, and better playability that everyone can enjoy. It’s made from a water-permeable marbled quartz sand matrix embedded with integrated hard marble aggregates for maximum durability and superior rebound.

Engineered for your convenience, these hard courts bring you top quality with longevity. They are easy to maintain and install and look good, creating value for money.

However, they can be hard on the joints and require periodic maintenance, such as resurfacing and repainting.

Pros:

  • A popular surface for outdoor pickleball courts, providing a durable and slip-resistant surface
  • Can be easily painted with court lines
  • Provides good ball bounce and player traction.

Cons:

  • May be hard on the joints, especially for older players
  • Can be affected by weather conditions, such as rain or extreme temperatures
  • Requires periodic maintenance, such as resurfacing and repainting.

Sand-filled and sand-dressed artificial grass carpets

Our sand-filled/sand-dressed artificial grass carpets present the perfect combination of style and performance – allowing you to create a premium court atmosphere while ensuring the surface performs for years to come. These carpets provide cushioning, traction, and durability with the low maintenance of synthetic turf.

This hybrid system includes an advanced synthetic thatch layer simulating the feel and look of a natural, lush green grass carpet, along with our incredible infill systems.

Our surface is carefully poured with specialised sand to simulate the same performance as natural sand. This fine-grained material provides players stability and balance throughout the game, allowing for accurate shots and consistent ball spin. Additionally, advanced artificial fibres are infused into our carpets to produce an aesthetically pleasing surface that will confidently look good on any court or backyard space.

Unlike other surfaces, sand infill gives excellent support, comfort underfoot, and enough ballast to keep everything in place, even after wet conditions, making it perfect for indoor or outdoor use all year round.

Pros:

  • Offers a softer surface, which can reduce the risk of injuries to joints
  • Provides good ball bounce and player traction
  • Durable and weather-resistant, making it ideal for outdoor use.

Cons:

  • Can be more expensive to install and maintain compared to other surfaces
  • May require regular brushing to keep the playing surface consistent
  • Weather conditions like heavy rain or high winds may affect the surface.

Polymeric rubber

Crafted from a carefully blended mix of polymeric rubber granules, this fast-drying court surface provides plenty of traction for superior agility and speed. Plus, it’s resistant to rain and spills for easy maintenance. The result is a smooth, stable playing surface with excellent shock absorption.

Built to last a lifetime, our Polymeric Rubber Pickleball Court Surface is designed with a thick layer of non-porous rubber to prevent cracks or any other damage caused by heavy foot traffic.

With its shock-absorbent properties, this specialised rubber flooring reduces the impact on your joints and muscles by providing exceptional cushioning upon impact.

This surface provides consistent bounce and player traction and can be used indoors and outdoors. It is low-maintenance and durable but can be affected by extreme weather conditions.

Whether it’s recreational or professional pickleball that you’re playing, you can be confident that this top-grade court surface will keep up with your most intensive games.

Artificial clay:

Artificial clay is a carpet system that uses special fillers to create a realistic clay surface feel.

Its unique design creates an even and consistent playing experience and gives you steady performance in any weather condition, making artificial clay courts ideal for all players.

This surface provides consistent bounce and player traction, similar to natural clay courts but with lower maintenance requirements.

Unlike natural clay courts, Artificial clay requires little maintenance, is weather resilient, and can last up to five times longer.

Artificial clay is also environmentally friendly, being made with recycled materials, so now you can play with a clear conscience and a reduced environmental impact.

  • Provides a consistent bounce and player traction
  • Can be used both indoors and outdoors

Porous cushioned acrylic:

This court surface is designed and crafted with advanced technology and materials, offering cushiony comfort and durability you won’t find elsewhere. It absorbs shock with its unique construction that combines an acrylic cushioning layer and a two-part puncture and tear-proof protection system. This combination gives it superior traction for fast movements and extreme hardness for massive durability.

The ultra-absorbent material drastically reduces sound levels from impacts, such as players hitting the ball hard during rallies or clashes between racquets.

It also comes with added protection against airborne debris and pests and excellent performance durability in most climates, so you can play outdoors for longer.

The result? Perfectly balanced control over all parts of the game.

Pros:

  • Offers a softer surface, which can reduce the risk of injuries to joints

  • Durable and low-maintenance, with little need for resurfacing

Non-porous cushioned acrylic (American cement):

Unlike traditional court surfaces, this cutting-edge product is designed to respond specifically to high-intensity games with its advanced shock absorption system – giving you a smooth, consistent playing experience every time.

This revolutionary surface also offers superior non-slip capabilities, making your pickleball matches safer. The material won’t change shape over time or warp under pressure and will keep a constant level of cushioning throughout your game. No more uneven areas on the court where returns can be unpredictable – this unique surface ensures a top-quality professional match is within reach.

It’s highly durable and long-lasting, so it will never wear out or require frequent repairs. The surface is non-porous, making it ideal for athletes who demand the safety of a slip-resistant and ergonomic playing experience. Planning Consent

Did you know constructing a pickleball court at your property may be easier than you think?

In many cases, planning permission isn’t needed to build this popular outdoor recreational area – making it simpler and more convenient for those wanting to add some fun into their backyard.

Planning permission is not usually required.

This is because no element of the court construction falls under the remit needing planning permission.

As long as you own the land you have selected and are currently using it for residential purposes – such as a garden or grounds of property- then it’s just a matter of determining how best to design the perfect court for your needs before getting an experienced professional team on board with its construction!

The great news is that these courts do not interfere with neighbouring properties either, so creating one should be hassle-free.

Are there any exceptions?

There are a few exceptions where you need to apply for planning permission to build the court. These include:

  • If the land requires a change of use – for example if you are planning to build the court on a field you own
  • If the house is a listed property
  • If permitted development rights have been removed
  • If the property is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty
  • If the court would constitute more than 50 percent of the garden
  • If extensive civil engineering works are required
  • If you want to have floodlights installed.
